The Circular Economy represents an opportunity for businesses to rethink and redefine the way that they make, use and discard products. Moving away from the linear model of ‘take, make, dispose’, circular based business models can be just as profitable, if not more, through the redirection and recovery of end of life products back into the supply chain, whilst reducing our reliance on raw materials and the generation of waste.

Coming from a background in automotive seating engineering, our Commercial Manager Andy has always had an interest in exploring the circularity of leather products.

“When you work in a single industry, it’s often difficult to find alternative uses for your waste products. In automotive seating, the industry has been looking for alternative applications for some time. Large OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers can struggle to be nimble enough to identify an opportunity and put resources in place in enough time to go for it, that’s where we come in and pull it all together, linking separate industries and solution providers with our innovation capabilities and programme management experience.”

Working with our Circular Economy team, Andy came across ‘Future Fashion Factory’, a £5.4 million R&D partnership exploring and developing new digital and advanced textile technologies to boost the design of high-value creative products.

“Becoming a member and understanding how Future Fashion Factory operates and the network and innovation it provides, helps us to explore circular opportunities across various different sectors and start to build projects that support both our customers and the overall mission of HSSMI”.

As a business, we believe that sustainability should be at the forefront of manufacturing, and we use our knowledge of the circular economy to support other businesses when it comes to implementing tools and processes that make their organisations more efficient and productive. As a member of Future Fashion Factory, we want to explore ways of taking our manufacturing skills and applying these to other industries that may find them beneficial, all the while working towards a zero-waste future for our society as whole.
