HyDIME | Past Project

The Hydrogen Diesel Injection in a Marine Environment (HyDIME) project aimed to prove the safe integration and use of hydrogen on vessels. One of HyDIME’s goals was the design and physical integration of a hydrogen injection system on a commercial passenger and vehicle ferry which was the first of its kind worldwide. The hydrogen used in the HyDIME project was cleanly produced from renewable energy.

ADVANCEPEM | Recent Project

The aim of ADVANCEPEM project is to offer a promising highly efficient and cost-effective alternative to conventional HRS paving the way for larger systems and wide scale deployment. In addition, for the whole hydrogen economy to succeed, a robust business model around the sale of hydrogen to vehicle owners/operators is needed. The ADVANCEPEM project also aims to help to pave the way towards a self-sustaining hydrogen economy.

SHyLO | Recent Project

The SHyLO project will advance a currently small-scale solid-state hydrogen storage system and build it into a large-scale hydrogen solution, which could be commercialised for different applications. The solution will be supported by an AI platform and will undergo testing in the Orkney Isles. Assessing existing legislation and safety regulations will be a key part of SHyLO and ensure that the upscaled hydrogen system is compliant.

HySMART | Past Project

HySMART will explore the feasibility of implementing advanced robotics processes to enable scale up in the manufacture of hydrogen fuel cell stack products. It is expected that the results of this feasibility study will increase confidence in hydrogen fuel cell technology and accelerate commercial uptake in the automotive sector by identifying ways to reduce costs and improve conformability, quality and robustness of the end product.

Fuel Cell Recovery | Past Project

The proposed project explored how hydrogen fuel cell systems in fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) can be recovered once they reach their end of life. The project developed new business models to enable a circular supply chain for FCEVSs, an effective supply chain infrastructure to facilitate the collection, recovery, and remarketing of fuel cells, as well as new product designs and design guidelines to enable fuel cells to be recovered appropriately.

FLEXIPLANAR Fuel Cell Manufacture | Past Project

This project focused on developing novel manufacturing capabilities for PCB based fuel cells. This technology has the potential to reduce fuel cell costs by up to 48% and significantly reduce their weight and volume. The main innovation from the project is the integration of processes into PCB manufacturing that enable rapid upscaling and reduce life cycle costs. The project also looked at how PCB fuel cells can be made more cost competitive to serve multiple markets such as automotive and consumer products.

FLEXIPLANAR Fuel Cell Integration | Past Project

This project aimed at proving out a highly innovative fuel cell range extender system in order to showcase the feasibility of a novel fuel cell stack as an alternative to conventional systems. The project focused on economic and ecological advantages of this new technology by showing how it can reduce the cost of the system, the weight per power output, and the size of the system with increased flexibility with regards to form factor.

HSSMI Techno-Economic Assessment Report for the HyDIME Project

During the HyDIME project, HSSMI conducted a techno-economic assessment of the HyDIME system being installed in Orkney and identified potential threats of the system as well as opportunities to scale and replicate the it across the UK.

HyDIME – Exploring the Feasibility of the World’s First Dual Diesel/Hydrogen Injection Ferry

HyDIME sought to design, integrate, and trial the world’s first dual hydrogen / diesel injection system onboard a commercial vessel in Orkney, using hydrogen generated at the Shapinsay port.

Funding Secured for UK’s First Hydrogen Injection System on a Ferry

Innovate UK have granted £430,332 funding to a consortium, led by Ferguson Marine Engineering Limited, to design and integrate a hydrogen diesel dual fuel injection system onboard a commercial ferry.
